Another very successful event to promote my book Past Sounds!
Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the Piano Trio Society, and in association with them, a Talk-Recital featuring Past Sounds was presented in the David Josefowitz Recital Hall at the Royal Academy of Music in London on the evening of Sunday 30 October. The event began with a warm welcome from the violinist and Founder-Chairman of the Society, Jane Faulkner. As the author I then gave a four-part overview of my book, outlining the development of the sonata idea in music for piano trio, with each part illustrated by a movement performed by the Astatine Piano Trio. This promising young trio of performers from the Royal College of Music were the First Prizewinners in the Piano Trio Society’s Senior Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition earlier in the year. They gave brilliant performances of music by J C Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms (see below). The combination of talk and music seemed a great success, warmly applauded by an audience of nearly 60 people, which happily included several distinguished musicians. The entertainment was followed by lively conversation over glasses of wine before everyone left – many clutching copies of my book!
This was the programme for the evening:
1) In the Beginning: The Fortepiano Sonata with Accompaniments
J C Bach, Sonata in C, op.15, no.1, WB 49
1st movement: Allegro
2) The Classical Fortepiano Trio
W A Mozart, Piano Trio in C, K 548
2nd movement: Andante cantabile
3) Out of the Salon and into the Concert Hall
Beethoven, Piano Trio “Ghost” in D, op.70, no.1
3rd movement: Presto
4) The Piano Trio after Beethoven
Brahms, Piano Trio no.1 in B, op.8
1st movement: Allegro con brio
